“Forsyth Park is at the very heart of our community”

- Van Johnson, Mayor of Savannah

Forsyth Park Master Plan

In partnership with the Trustees’ Garden Club of Savannah and the Friends of Forsyth, The Master Plan began in the spring of 2020 and despite challenges posed by COVID19, incorporated a robust community engagement effort, the largest in the City of Savannah with 5000+ responses. Three phases of community surveys, outreach, public meetings and focus groups not only informed the project, but also went beyond to engage the community as design partners. The resultant proposal prioritized the health of the existing live oak trees as well as functionality, connectivity and safety of the park.

The Master Plan proposes a new bike lane along the perimeter of the park as well as new restrooms, playgrounds, gathering spaces, lighting and furnishing, while preserving the historic elements and character of the park. In response to the Confederate Monument in the Park, the Master Plan proposed a location for a future monument as a way of recontextualizing a painful history and give a voice to those previously silenced.
